The Fox Sports crew attendedย a special broadcast at Naval Base San Diego to take part in their ongoing tradition of honoring the US Armed Forces. The event occurs annually as part of Veterans Day weekend, where tribute is paid to the dedication and sacrifices of the men and women who have served the nation.

Foxย broadcasted the event, where the seven-man “Fox NFL Sunday” crew was joined by numerous service members in uniform as the national anthem played over the loudspeakers.

Six of the men Strahan stood with had their hands over their hearts while “The Star-Spangled Banner” played. However, Strahanย intertwined his arms in front of him sparking controversy on social media.

Viewers voiced strong reactions toย Michael Strahan’sย move, finding it particularly offensive to the anthem and the military during a broadcast designed to honor the men and women of the armed forces.

One personย asked,ย “Why couldn’t Michael Strahan put his hand over his heart during the US Navy Band playing the National Anthem?”ย Anotherย calledย itย “Disgusting! Disrespectful!”

A fan tagged the host directly,ย writing,ย “@michaelstrahan Disrespectful. You should be ashamed.”ย Another went further,ย saying,ย “Fire @michaelstrahan So disrespectful!!”

One viewer emphaticallyย added,ย “Fire Strahan !!”ย Someย questionedย his actions with skepticism,ย “Someone should ask @michaelstrahan why he doesn’t place his hand over his heart during our national anthem? It’s a rhetorical question. I already know the answer.”

Yet, othersย defendedย him, “Why can’t people just mind their business? He’s standing respectfully. Relax.”ย Another userย clarified,ย “Hand over heart for the Pledge of Allegiance, not necessary for the Anthem if you’re standing quietly.”

During flag ceremoniesโ€”such as hoisting, lowering, or when the flag passes in a paradeโ€”protocols outlineย how people should show respect. Those in uniform are expected to render a military salute. Armed Forces members and veterans not in uniform may also choose to give a salute.

Civilians, like Strahan, should stand at attention, facing the flag, with their right handย over their heart. If the civilians are wearing a hat, they should remove it with their right hand, holding it over their heart.

Strahan stood respectfully, which aligns with basic decorum for civilians during the anthem. However, it differs from the traditional hand-over-heart gesture that some viewers expected.

As much as these viewers accused him of being disrespectful, Strahan went on to celebrate veterans on his Instagram page after the event. “Thank you to all veterans and active service members who courageously risk their lives to protect us every day. Your selfless service is beyond measure,” heย wrote alongside a picture of his father.

As per his post, his father, Maj. Gene W. Strahan, Sr., served for 23 years in the US Army and was a proud member of the 82nd Airborne Division.

“Just as I honor my father, I keep all of you in my thoughts each and every day as we would not have the safety and freedoms we cherish without you. Thank You,” Strahanย added, his message underscoring his deep respect for their sacrifices.
